What is CicloVia

The Reason
CicloVia - Juarez, Mexico 2006 El Paso has only 25% of the park capacity of the average U.S. city. This makes it a challenge to find park or recreation space for our citizens. Many do not live within walking or biking distance of a park, and many do not have access to cars to take them to a park. Hence the need to “take parks to the streets.”

The History
Just over twenty years ago, the City of Bogota Colombia began the Ciclovia concept by reserving selected streets for pedestrian use only. Now, nearly a million people fill the roads of Bogota every Sunday morning.

In 2003, Ciudad Juarez introduced its own Ciclovia. Participation was estimated at 60,000 people per Sunday. However, as a new administration took office, the program was discontinued.

In 2005, the El Paso City Council took on the challenge of becoming the first US City to host a Ciclovia. This May marks the pilot run of the program. If it proves to be successful, the route can grow allowing the whole city the opportunity to experience Ciclovia.
